C. Charlot, a 40-year-old dedicated mother of four, was determined to create a more stable future for her family. While enrolled in the LA Works STEP program, C.C. faced unemployment and limited resources but remained focused on securing meaningful employment and improving her financial situation.
C.C. successfully obtained a position with Rouses Market, where she was scheduled to work approximately 30–32 hours per week for $14 per hour. Just prior to her start date, she discovered she did not have the proper identification required to complete the hiring process. This unexpected setback temporarily delayed her employment and placed the opportunity at risk.
With timely support from Goodwill staff, including the Career Navigation Manager, C.C. was able to quickly resolve this issue. She received assistance in transferring her out-of-state driver’s license to a valid Louisiana license, removing the final barrier to employment. As a result, C.C. was able to begin work the same day her identification was secured.
In her role at Rouses Market, C.C. is gaining valuable experience in customer service, time management and workplace professionalism. The training and guidance she received through the STEP program have translated directly to her job performance, equipping her with the confidence and skills needed to succeed in a fast-paced environment.
Despite initial challenges, C.C. demonstrated resilience and determination. She remained engaged with program staff, followed through on all required steps and stayed committed to her employment goals. She continues to build stability by maintaining consistent attendance, strengthening her work ethic and exploring opportunities for advancement. C.C. attributes her progress to both her personal motivation and the strong support system provided through the STEP program. The structured guidance and hands-on assistance she received were instrumental in helping her overcome barriers and remain on track.
C.C. reports positive early experiences, including successfully adapting to her role and maintaining a professional attitude. She is also exploring additional training opportunities to enhance her skills and increase her earning potential, demonstrating a proactive approach to long-term career growth.
This opportunity has already begun to generate a positive economic impact for C.C. and her family. Through consistent income, she is working toward greater financial independence, reduced reliance on public assistance, and increased household stability. Her progress not only benefits her children, but also reflects the broader impact of workforce development programs within the community.
C. Charlot’s journey highlights the power of determination, timely intervention and access to supportive services. Through the STEP program and her continued commitment, she has successfully transitioned from unemployment to meaningful employment—taking an important step toward a more stable and secure future.
